Poor Baby
This will be long, it was a rough weekend.
I took Quinn to the pediatrician Friday. Something just wasn't right and I didn't want go all weekend having him in pain. I'm glad I did. His ear infection is still there, after three different antibiotics! Now he's on his fourth. I suspect it won't work... they say he'll need tubes in his ears if this doesn't work. I've been told by people that the surgery is like a night and day difference in a baby. I'm sure it is, but it makes me so sad that he's so prone to things like infection and allergies. I really do hope he out grows these things one day. They say the ear infection was caused by all the colds he had. I asked them why the antibiotics don't seem to be working, I wondered if it was do to all the antibiotics that were pumped through him for three days straight at the hospital... they said so many children have used antibiotics that the germs are just harder to kill. If that truly is the case, I'm frightened to see these germs in another twenty years! She assures me that the surgery is not that bad. As far as "surgery" goes this is extremely simple. She says all he'll need is an air tube on his nose and it should be over in ten minutes. Then the tubes will either fall out on their own or they'll take them out later.
To top it all off he also has a stomach Virus, which is another reason we took him on Friday. He refused food for two days straight! He'd eat solids OK but he would not take his bottle or his Juice. We we're so worried about dehydration. I got to talking with a lady at the pediatricians who said her sister's baby had to go to the hospital to be put on an IV because she also refused to eat with the same virus. At first we thought the virus was just a side effects from the antibiotics. He had bad diarrhea for days. Eventually the daycare told us of the bug going around and that a few kids were sick, the major symptoms were diarrhea and refusal to eat. It pissed me off that they didn’t' tell us right away. I think parents should be told right away of a bug going around! We almost pulled him off his antibiotics early because of this!
So the doctor gave us ear drops and told us to put him on round the clock Tylenol and mortin for about 48 hours. Motrin every six hours and Tylenol in between at the three hour mark. Tony and I had been giving him infant Tylenol but he still seemed to be in pain. So it was nice to hear the doctor say "don't use infant drops anymore, they'll do nothing for him now, use children's"
Last night we gave him all his medicine and we forgot a VERY important rule. Do not give him medicine after a bottle! If you do not give him the medicine slowly enough he gags. So he gagged, and up came all the medicine. Then I guess the gag reflex triggered more and up came EVERYTHING he ate. IT was horrible! I've seen him up chuck before but this was different. He couldn't stop, he couldn't breath, his body was convulsing with the force of it and it poured out of his nose. It was the most horrible thing I have ever seen. It took us about half an hour to clear his nose and calm him down. I think it scared the shit out of him. I've never heard him cry so hard, ok yes I have, he cried like he did at the hospital. I never want to hear that cry again. Tony, who recently laughed so hard he blew soda out his nose, said that it burns real bad when it comes out of your nose. So maybe that is also why it took so long to calm him down. When all was said and done he went right back to his happy little self again. So no harm done but we must remember to never give him meds on a full tummy!

Kelsey wasn't quite 2 yet and she had caught a virus or something but she had to be hospitalized because she wouldn't even keep the IV fluids in her, it is the worst and most draining thing in the world to see your child so sick and feel so powerless to help them get better, Welcome to Motherhood.
As far as the tubes, I had tubes when I was young, not quite as young as Quinn, but it is so very common these days that while the idea of surgery is scary, it is really not a big deal. Mine fell out after 5 or 6 years and I wouldn't have noticed but my mom spotted it when she was cleaning out my ear, they are so tiny it is amazing. My niece had tubes put in as a baby and her ear infections disappeared. Kelsey had a lot of ear infections as a baby and since I have had recurrent tumors resulting in my deafness, that scared the crap out of me, I was worried she inherited the ear problems from me and would have the same problems I do, luckily, the Dr. was able to tell through X-rays that her Mastoid bone was in tact and there was nothing abnormal there so she should be fine and after she turned 1 the infections were less frequent. However, now we have traded in ear infections for Strep Throat. It is always something.
It would be nice if daycares and schools reported that a virus or a "bug" was going around, but unfortunately, they would be giving a report every day so they usually only report major illnesses. Kids, especially infants and toddlers, know nothing of hygene so germs breed in daycares and schools. All it takes is one kid to sneeze and boom, there is a cold epidemic. It is a never ending battle, just as they get over one thing, they catch it again or something new that is going around, kids won't share toys but they share germs awfully well :)
Hang in there sweetie! This is the one of the toughest experiences in parenting, just know we are all here for you and we love you. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.
