Quinn has been making this gasping sound sometimes. It scares the hell out of me!
We've been told by the doctor that there is a good chance he will be a very allergic little boy. Because of his allergies to Milk protein, soy, lactose intolerance and his Eczema, they figure there are more allergies to follow, Some kids are just prone and he seems to be.
I read that:
1 - Allergies can create Asthma
2 - Extreme use of antibiotics have been linked to Asthma
3 - Asthma can effect babies, but go away later
4 - There are two types Asthma, one is much more severe then the other
5 - One type of Asthma is caused by over exertion and another by allergies.
If in fact this gasping sound is the onset of Asthma, I believe he may develop the allergy Asthma, and the less severe one, because he seems to gasp more when he's relaxed then playing and it's not a severe sounding gasp, it's more like a "catch my breath" kinda gasp. It kinda sounds like Darth Vador when he breathes, imagine Darth Vador out of breath, that is the sound. It's short lived and usually only a few breathes.
But I can't rule out the fact that he only makes this gasping sound when he's "talking" so maybe it's just a new sound he likes. But AGAIN it scares the hell out of me!
I remember asking the doctors if he could be lactose intolerant when he was two weeks old, they told me it's extremely rare and they doubted it. One week later he's being rushed to Chop because he has distention (blockage, no food can go down). After all those horrible test to rule out things like backwards intestines, hirshprongs disease and a few other scary tests and three days of not eating guess what it was! Allergies to MILK and LACTOSE INTOLERANCE!!!! Ladies (and daddy's) TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!!!!!! I will watch Quinn like a hawk if I think he may develop Asthma because AGAIN they say "it's extremely rare", where have I heard that before!?

I am lactose intolerant and have been my whole life. It sucks. Are you sure he allergic to soy? Soy does not contain lactose, so it is usually substituted for milk with such allergies. If you think he is also allergic to soy try rice milk or almond milk. There are MANY alternatives for dairy to help you through this, but you have to rule out the allergy to soy since most of it is soy based including tofu.
As far as the asthma goes, I have that too. I had exerise enduced asthma, this is the exertion kind, this can go away, I didn't develope it until I was in my teens. The allergy asthma usually doesn't go away but can be controlled. It can however go into remission and never bother him again over the years.
Good luck and hope this helps you out. If you need any advise on asthma or dairy alternatives let me know.
Another thing that you should get him tested for is celiac disease and gluten allergy. These can also be misdiagnosed as lactose intolerance. If he is having problems with soy and dairy I wouldn't rule out either of these.
Here are 2 articles one talks about the symptoms and the other talks about foods that contain gluten.

Another ting you can have him tested for...believe it or not is Acid Reflux......when Josh was a baby......its ray ...hi......he had the EXACT same weezing thing your talking about...in fact a lot of what you say about quinn is very similar to josh.......The FIRST person to see him was a nurse....shouldve listened to her......she said especially in babies....they can have Acid reflux disorder.....especially if it runs in the family which it does on my side.....she went on to say that the symptoms are almost identical to Asthma and even allergies which is why most of the time it gets mis-diagnosed...soo we took him to a couple of doctors...they said that was ubsurd and that he had asthma and he needed to go on medication right away........sharon we had him on the stupid nebulizer almost everyday...and on presnidone...a steroid because they were " right"...and hey they are the doctors so you naturally go with it.......it made him much much worse it came down to one day i was giving it to him and it was just horrible watching his reaction...so i threw it all out never put him on it again......we later learned through a newer doctor that there is in fact a form of asthma that babies can be born with that they grow out of and our assesment is that he had a little of both cause ever since that day hes been fine......we also learned that Nutramageon ( spelling? ) and carnation especially are good alternatives for feeding.......maybe hes going through that ya know....something the docs hadnt thought of yet.......hope this all helps :)
